Are you a small business owner wondering how you can improve workplace safety for your employees? Last year, in response to numerous requests, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) initiated a free on-site consultation program to help companies comply with appropriate standards.
OSHA’s program is completely voluntary, so you begin by initiating a request through their website. A consultant will then contact you to discuss your particular needs and set up an appointment.
How the Consultation Works
• Upon arrival, the consultant will hold an initial conference with you to discuss the process, explain his role and clarify your obligations.
• The two of you will then conduct a walk-through of your workplace, focusing on areas such as the trash room that may be of specific concern to you. In addition to addressing OSHA standards, the consultant will point out potential hazards that may be outside OSHA’s official scope.
• OSHA recommends that you encourage interaction with employees to get their perspective and engage them in the process.
• Finally, the consultant conducts a closing conference to review his findings, both positive and negative. He will also discuss possible solutions to any problems as well as an abatement period during which time you will implement any corrections.
• While the consultant is not a whistle-blower and will not report violations, you are expected to finalize agreed-upon improvements within the abatement period.
