The Danger of Push and Pull Injuries – Think Dumpster Movers!

The Danger of Push and Pull Injuries - Think Dumpster Movers!
The Danger of Push and Pull Injuries – Think Dumpster Movers!

Pushing and pulling may seem like basic activities, but according to the CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) they are behind roughly 20 percent of workplace injuries. Not only do they increase risk of injury, pushing and pulling inflict stress on the body’s musculoskeletal system.

Studies show that these injuries are a result of poor body mechanics rather than unsafe work conditions. Share these techniques with employees to reduce risks involved in pushing and pulling.

Safety Tips for Pushing and Pulling

1. Whenever possible, push rather than pull to relieve stress on lower back muscles and face forward while moving.

2. Be realistic about the effort involved in transporting a heavy load. Consider the task carefully and ask for help when you need it.

3. Make sure the dumpster puller or other mover is in good operational condition. Determine the best route to travel and inspect it beforehand for any obstructions.

4. Use a slow but steady movement when starting and stopping a load. Sudden exertions can add undue stress to muscles and joints.

5. Always use proper body mechanics:

  • Hands should be chest height and shoulder width apart.
  • Contract your abdomen, maintaining a slight arch in your lower back.
  • As you bend your elbows, retract your shoulder blades and push your chest forward.
  • Keep feet flat and shoulder width apart.

New Dumpster Mover Muscles Trash Containers

Responding to customer need, DJ Products announces the addition of a new dumpster mover to its world-recognized line of ergonomically-designed, battery-powered cart pushers. The DJ Products dumpster mover easily pulls heavy trash and recycling dumpsters and containers to the curb or a designated location for pick up. The new dumpster mover provides an excellent solution for retailers, office buildings, apartment and condominium complexes, hospitals and nursing homes, hotels, shopping centers, manufacturers, distribution centers, and any business that has to haul heavy containers for trash or recycling pick up.

Trash and recycling containers and dumpsters are typically located near trash compactors and bailers deep inside underground parking garages or in designated areas on the plant floor. These heavy containers must be maneuvered around equipment or vehicles across crowded floors or parking garages to designated collection sites or to the outside curb for access by waste haulers. Due to the heavy, unbalanced loads they contain, trash and recycling containers and dumpsters can be extremely awkward and difficult to move and maneuver, particularly around obstacles. When performed manually, the task of pushing and pulling these containers across long distances and up underground slopes to street level puts workers at high risk for expensive and debilitating musculoskeletal injuries.

DJ Products’ ergonomically designed dumpster mover eliminates the pains and strains associated with manually pushing heavy carts and wheeled equipment. Its compact design allows this dynamic cart mover to maneuver easily through tight spaces such as hallways, aisles, doors and crowded parking garages. A powerful 36-volt motor makes this heavy-duty tug capable of muscling dumpsters and containers weighing 500 to 10,000 pounds. The new DJ Products dumpster mover turns a three or four-person job into a quick and easy one-person operation. This powerful battery-operated waste mover can easily push or pull heavy dumpsters or trash/recycling containers up sharp inclines, over asphalt and even through snow and ice.

Visit the DJ Products website for more information on our new battery-powered dumpster mover and to see this amazing ergonomic tug in action. Call 1-800-686-2651 or contact us online to talk to one of our engineering specialists about arranging a free demo trial of our new dumpster mover.

  • The CartCaddyHD is the workhorse you need to move heavy duty loads and equipment up to 50,000 pounds.
  • Our RiderCaddy is designed to transport the heaviest loads and can easily move loaded trailers. A built-in platform allows the operator to either sit or stand on the caddy while moving loads at speeds up to 6 mph.

All DJ Products’ power movers are equipped with standard 3-1/2-volt batteries (36-volt system) that provide 16 hours of continuous use before recharging — plenty of power for two full shifts. Our CartCaddies are designed as walk-behind units (or ride-behind in the case of our RiderCaddy) to provide operators maximum control and visibility. Variable-speed, ergonomically-designed twist grips prevent carpal tunnel syndrome and allow operators to maintain smooth control during maneuvering. CartCaddies are capable of both forward and reverse operation and speeds from 0 to 3 mph. A safety stop switch, an essential safety feature, is conveniently located on the back of the handle bar box, allowing the operator to stop the mover instantly to prevent injury.Visit the DJ Products’ website to review the specifications of all our ergonomically-designed CartCaddy products. Highlighting the Cart Caddy Roll Pusher

Heavy, bulky boxes and crates are difficult enough to move around a warehouse or workplace. How do you handle round products like paper rolls and spools that can turn on their own? Enter the CartCaddy Roll Pusher from DJ Products.

Our Roll Pusher puts an end to awkward attempts to manually move these circular shaped items. It adds a custom, adjustable roller system mounted to the front of our CartCaddy heavy duty pusher/puller. The roller adds pressure to the tires for extra traction while it pushes against the bottom of the object being moved.

The ergonomically designed variable speed twist grip allows the operator to roll the object forward without letting it go too fast. The item will accelerate and slow down along with the speed of the CartCaddy. In addition, the rollers extend beyond the profile of the pusher to pick individual rolls that are stacked next to each other.

CartCaddy Roll PusherThe Roll Pusher can accommodate loads of up to 20,000 pounds. Its ease of use allows a single person to operate it, reducing the amount of manpower needed to transport items. The three-battery system provides 16 hours of continuous use to last through two shifts.

Our CartCaddy Roll Pusher is only one of many material handling solutions available from Team Cart Caddy. We have products to fit applications from hospitals to hotels to general aviation. Cart Puller Improves Worker Attitude in Hospital Laundry

In a cost-benefit analysis of ergonomics in hospital laundries, musculoskeletal injuries decreased and “88% of the workers felt the changes made their work better,” according to the report conducted by the School of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. When you’re watching every dollar in a tight economy, cutting workplace injury and it associated hefty healthcare and insurance costs can give your bottom line a real boost.Implementing ergonomic solutions like DJ Products’ cart puller to workplace problems provides the added advantage of increasing employee morale. When employees are happy, productivity, efficiency, quality and customer service improve right along with employee satisfaction. You benefit, and equally important, your customers benefit. It’s the ultimate win-win scenario. In the two-year Canadian study of three laundries, both laundries that implemented ergonomic improvements and trained employees in ergonomic practices enjoyed a marked decrease in worker injury and unexpected escalation in employee job satisfaction. No changes in injury rate or employee psychosocial factors were noted in the control laundry which made no changes. The benefit-to-cost ratios for the two test laundries were 0.97 and 1.5, “demonstrating a one-year or less payback on ergonomic improvements,” the study reported. In addition to medical/insurance savings, the greatest returns on investment were reported “in productivity and savings in overtime, turnover and return-to-work costs,” study authors noted. The incidence of medical costs and lost man-hours dropped from 48.8% to just 18.6% over the two-year study. The boon to workers was even more extraordinary. Questionnaires asked  employees to assess how implemented ergonomic improvements had impacted their jobs:

  • 70% reported that ergonomic improvements made their jobs less physically demanding
  • 69% said they were less tired
  • 75% noted less muscle soreness
  • 75% said their job was now more interesting and more varied
  • 93% said they felt happier and more satisfied about their job

Customers Find Unusual Applications for DJ Products’ Powered Carts

Here at DJ Products, we love to hear about some of the unusual and unique uses our customers have found for our motorized carts and powered movers. Often our customers’ inventiveness matches our own when it comes to finding new uses for our ergonomically-designed, compact and highly maneuverable CartCaddies.

S.B. of Sound Construction, who uses our versatile TrailerCaddy on job sites, found a unique personal use for his motorized vehicle mover during off hours. Boating and fishing are the big sports in his neck of the woods where nearly every driveway sports a boat on a trailer. Tired of the tedious back and forth maneuvering it takes to back a boat trailer into a narrow driveway, S.B. put his TrailerCaddy to use and easily positioned his boat in record time — and still had plenty of space to get the family car into the garage. His neighbors were so impressed, his TrailerCaddy is now in hot demand.

“No more must I watch the neighbors look like geeks trying to back their boats into the driveway — they simply borrow my TrailerCaddy,”  S.B said.

Often, customers come to us with a specific problem that challenges us to find new applications for our motorized equipment movers. We’re always pleased when our solution is a hit, as it was for J.A. of Wausau West High School.

Lugging heavy, unwieldy, free-standing bleachers from one site to another was a problem for the maintenance crew at Wausau West High School. If you have ever tried to move one of these massive blocks of “portable” temporary bleachers, you know portability played second fiddle to sturdy construction when these units were designed. Unfortunately, the multiple uses to which schools must put their space demand flexible equipment use. Muscling bleachers into position for band concerts, school assemblies and various sporting events can tax the physical resources of even the stoutest maintenance crew. The risk of muscle and back strain and other injuries is high.

J.A. came to us seeking a solution. Our small profile, highly maneuverable, powered tugger, the CartCaddyShorty, proved to be the perfect solution. Capable of handling 3,000 pounds and maneuvering in tight spaces and crowded school corridors, the CartCaddyShorty allows a single worker to move and maneuver into place the school’s bleacher units in record time with no more backaches!

“Planning on spreading the work on this solution to the bleacher problem in other schools,” said a pleased J.A.

If you’ve found an unusual use for our equipment, we’d love to hear from you. And if you have a particular problem, give us a call. We love a challenge!
